American Pharoah: The Six-Figure Stud

Triple Crown winner American Pharoah has done all he can do on the track. Now it’s time to see what he can do in the breeding shed.

American Pharoah will stand at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud for $200,000 in his first season, second only to Tapit who stands for a whopping $300,000 at Gainesway Farm in Lexington.

In contrast to the 1978 Triple Crown winner Affirmed who last stood for a paltry $30,000 in 2000, American Pharoah’s first year stud fee more closely resembles the $250,000 fee for a guaranteed foal by the ’78 Triple Crown runner-up Alydar.

Will American Pharoah prove to be as good a stallion as he was on the track remains to be seen but with $200,000 and a mare you can find out.

As a side note, there’s an excellent article on Bloodhorse.com written by Tom Dixon about Alydar and the conspiracy theory surrounding his death. It’s worth a read.
