PP Horse Trainer Odds
1 Tacitus Mott 5-2
Has proven to be the typical Wood Memorial winner who was. In other words, after the Wood the annual winner fails to live up to the hype in the Derby and beyond. Runner-up in his last three, he’ll try to improve upon his Belmont placing when he split the top three finishing second behind Sir Winston and ahead of Joevia — neither of which could win this. Mott added the hood in last in an attempt to wake him up early and hope he keeps going as the Travers favorite. But Code of Honor came roaring home in front. Despite the five-horse field he could end-up in one of the minor, minor spots as he faces older runners for the first time.
2 Code of Honor McGaughey 8-5
Winner of the Travers in last, Johnny V. sticks with him and McGaughey who is 0 for 12 at the current Belmont meet. Gotta believe that he likes the NYRA circuit and suspect he likes the deep Saratoga surface a tad more than Big Sandy. Weather conditions should be right for him as he makes his first start vs. older as the slight favorite. But the glaring trainer stat is always cause for concern. Caution.
3 Vino Rosso Pletcher 7-2
In contrast, Pletcher is 9 for 30 at the meet and will send out this 4YO son of Curlin without the blinkers for the first time in his career. Gotta wonder whether Johnny V’s decision to stick with Code of Honor was tough or not given he’s the only rider on paper to top this guy for Pletcher. But getting Ortiz Jr. is cause enough for us to take this guy seriously sans the hood. BTW, he won the ’18 Wood but then faced Justify in two of the three legs of the Triple Crown so it’s hardly a comparison to the previously mentioned Wood winner in here. I suspect we’ll see a different side of this guy in here. Choice.
4 Preservationist Jerkins 9-5
Second choice in the field off his first place finish last time out in the Woodward at Saratoga, he returns to Belmont where he’s had success winning back to back outings this past summer including a gate-to-wire win in the G2 Suburban over Catholic Boy and Pavel. Remember, this is a Breeders’ Cup ‘Win and In’ race and his last shot at a start in the Classic. Add to that the poor jockey/trainer stats at the meet and it’s hard to make a strong case for him winning at an underlay on the open.
5 Olympic Village Hess 30-1
Which brings us to another Paolucci racing ‘wonder’ at long odds. Winner of three in a row for Live Oak Plantation and Trombetta, he was claimed from his last start for $75K by current connections and will be sent out by west coast trainer Bob Hess. If there’s an upside to this guy, Castellano returns in the saddle hoping to turn this guy into a graded stakes winner in his first ever outing against graded company. This ‘Olympic’ runner will be making only his second start in the past 10 months in a very tough spot. But you gotta love Paolucci’s stubborn persistance as a race filler.
