Free Sam F. Davis Stakes past performances for Saturday, February 9, 2019

The field for the Sam Davis Stakes (G3) is set to compete for a purse of $250,000 and 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Included in the field of 10 three-year-old Kentucky Derby hopefuls are a pair of Godolphin Stable runners Cave Run and Kentucky Wildcat. The former is a son of Street Sense who is one-for-two at Tampa but his trainer is 0’fer in graded stakes company. Kentucky Wildcat will be making his 2019 with plenty of promise after showing vast improvement in his second and third start for a winning trainer. Expect he’ll relish the added distance.

The Sam Davis Stakes is on the Road to the Kentucky Derby and wagering on the Kentucky Derby futures Pool 2 is now open through Sunday, February 10, 2019. For live odds on the 23 betting interests plus the field of all others, visit KentuckyDerby.com.

PP Horse Trainer Odds
1 Counter Offer Ian Wilkes 12-1
Made the lead at the top of the stretch last time out here in an OC$75K but was overcome late by the Pletcher trainee So Alive who also returns here. Despite barns success at the meet thus far (23% winners), the graded stakes stats are dismal. One-run-type will need to be harnessed until the right time to move to improve off his career high Beyer (72) in last. Off going could help get his second victory.
2 Going for Gold Ron Hess 20-1
Maiden will make his third career start wearing blinkers for the first time after sprinting out to an early lead twice at Laurel only to tire at the wire. Pace setter will have plenty of company going two-turns for the first time and blinkers means they’re all in for the lead today but faces too tough a task to take them around the oval in South Florida.
3 Knicks Go Ben Colebrook 5-2
We’ve said it before, we don’t like horses that break their maidens at Ellis Park. But this guy was second in the G1 BC Juvenile to current Kentucky Derby favorite Game Winner. Showed plenty of stamina and an affinity for the CD strip that day at 40-1. Returned as the favorite LTO in the KYJC (G2) to finish 11th over a sloppy track so we’ll excuse that effort. Plenty of sunshine in the forecast for this one and he’ll open as the favorite. Comes in off layoff of 60+ days facing a ton of speed.
4 Cave Run Eoin Harty 6-1
Opened his career here winning a 6 furlong sprint in the slop by six. Returned a month later as the beaten favorite finishing third in a five horse field. Son of Street Sense runs in the Godolphin colors going two-turns for the first time. Last two race Beyer’s better than most others in here. Should improve in third time around a track he’s proven on but steps up to graded company for trainer who is 0 for 10 in stakes races this year. And that’s concerning.
5 Moonster Dale Romans 30-1
Was dusted by today’s opening line favorite last fall in the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland . But that was the race after maiden score, so excusable. Was third in a four-horse-race last time out at GP. Albarado may have given up on this guy (in the saddle 4 of 6 starts, including only win) but picks up high percentage Camacho for 11% graded stakes winning trainer in 2019. Can’t see him overcoming boxcar odds.
6 Kentucky Wildcat Tom Albertrani 9-2
Makes his 2019 debut off maiden victory at Aqueduct last December. Has shown rapid improvement in each start since his opening career at Saratoga in a six-panel sprint (54 BSF). Earned a 77 Beyer next time out finishing second going two-turns at Belmont. And an 86 cutting back to 1 mile in his AQU win. Another for Godolphin with a much better chance for success and should relish the added sixteenth this time around. Must overcome first out vs. winners but expect BIG things from him.
7 Five Star General Arnaud Delacour 4-1
Back-to-back wins coming in to this for jockey/trainer combo who has made a trip to the winner’s circle at a clip of 23% this year. But in graded stakes races, trainer is a paltry 3%. Still can’t deny that this top brass runner for WinStar et. al., has launched a full on assault from the break in his two wins since adding blinkers. Part of the pace but there’s plenty of that and can’t overlook the stakes numbers of this trainer.
8 So Alive Todd Pletcher 5-1
Not to diminish the success of jockey Camacho who rode this guy to victory in his last start here for the Toddster. But Pletcher has called up big name rider Castellano in preparation for what he hopes will be a future date on the big stage in May. His sire Super Saver didn’t run this race in 2010. But he did win the Tampa Bay Derby that year for Pletcher. Added ground a plus for tactical type with plenty of upside and an excellent chance to pick up the purse and the points.
9 Well Defined Kathleen O’Connell 8-1
High percentage connections will send this guy out with blinkers for the first time to try and keep him focused. Broke his maiden at this distance three back in a restricted race for Florida breds at GP. Two-back was soundly defeated in the BC Juvenile showing his “well defined” limits. He has to go from the outside and only adds to the front-end fight for the lead.
10 Still Dreaming Graham Motion 15-1
Promise abounds for this half brother to multiple G1 and 2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist. High percentage jockey/trainer combo teams up to try and win this G3 off a maiden score at Laurel. Will have to take back from the 10 hole and try to come from off the pace in a very competitive running of the Sam F. Davis.
