Fountain of Youth 2020 Analysis, Free PPs

Kentucky Derby 2020 Date

Free Fountain of Youth Stakes past performances for February 29, 2020 at Gulfstream Park

The field for the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) $400,000 will go as the 14th race on a long card at Gulfstream in Hallandale, Florida.

The full field of 12 is headed by the Iroquois winner Dennis’ Moment whose long awaited return to the races after a stumbling start and last place finish as the favorite in the BC Juvenile last November at Santa Anita. The field of Derby hopefuls be racing towards the top cash prize in the graded stakes event for three-year-old on the Road to the Kentucky Derby on May 2. In addition to the purse money, the Fountain of Youth will award points to the top four finishers in a 50-20-10-5 distribution.

The Official Field for the 1 1/16 miles Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream Park

1. Candy Tycoon – After four competitive trips to the track under Velazquez, culminating with a maiden victory in his last start here on January 25, he’ll head into the starting gate with a new rider for Pletcher. Chased home by his stablemate in last, the inside post will help his cause. But the fact that barn’s go-to-rider lands in a completely different direction, and the always tough first out vs. winners angle, is enough reason to question his chances in what is a truly weak Fountain of Youth.

2. Makabim – You can’t win if you don’t run. But this guy has been claimed twice for a pittance in his seven race career. On paper, he would have a shot if the conditions were claiming NW3 lifetime for $15K. But that’s not the case. And there isn’t one for this guy’s chances.

3. Masterday – Won his maiden trip to the track during the GPW (Gulfstream Park West…otherwise known as the ‘also rans’ meet during Gulfstream’s off season). But we’re in full on fast mode in South Florida now. Crushed by Ete Indian in his first race of the regular meet. Did perform well last time out when second under Paco – who lands elsewhere. Again, this is a WEAK FOY, but he would be a lengthy stretch of the imagination.

4. The Falcon – His chances in here are about is high as Sean Penn was as “the Snowman” in the movie The Falcon and the Snowman. However, as a side note, his sire Union Rags stormed home a winner in the 2012 running of this one.

5. Dennis’ Moment – The favorite, his two wins from four starts are bookended by two unlucky outings. In his maiden voyage he clipped heels and unseated Albarado in a 5f sprint at Churchill. But returned to take his next out by 19 at Ellis – which is not the place you want to break your maiden if you want to be taken seriously on down the Road. He returned to take the Iroquois in his next beating the horse formerly known as Noose who disappointed in the Risen Star at Fair Grounds. With all that said, he shocked the system last time out in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile as the prohibitive favorite when he stumbled at the start to finish last in the field of 8. Romans is high on him for this as he opens the 2020 season looking to make amends for the headscratcher. Pratt replaces regular rider Ortiz, Jr. who is sidelined with a broken wrist. Use CAUTION at short odds.

6. As Seen On Tv – Another GPW winner two back in a restricted state bred stakes race sprinting here in November. But to his credit he was a tough but tiring second in the Mucho Macho Man in his last start. He’ll face the winner of that one again in here. Son of Lookin’ At Lucky, he has tactical speed to press the pace but the added distance will need the perfectly timed move if he’s gonna win. Lopez sticks with him after a dueling effort in the Mucho Macho Man which was key for third place finisher Sole Volante who returned to defeat heavily favorite Independence Hall in the Sam Davis at Tampa last time out. Exotics player.

7. Country Grammer – Son of 2014 Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist, he’ll cut back from his 1 1/8 miles victory against maidens last time out at Aqueduct. The Pletcher trained Portos, runner up that day, returned to take a MSW, and was third in the G3 Withers behind Shotski. Could surprise at a price from far off the pace.

8. Gear Jockey – Calumet homebred still looking for his first win in what will be his sixth try. Three best were on turf including a third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf won by the undefeated Structor. Gets Leparoux but hard to see him playing much of a role in here.

9. Liam’s Lucky Charm – Contested in one-half of the Risen Star at Fair Grounds beating one of eleven home that day. Cuts back and faces Chance It for the fourth time, but wearing blinkers which proved successful two back at Tampa. With that considered, making a case for him to improve in a crowded field full of “pacey” types is tough. Pass.

10. Shotski – Surprising price considering his second place finish last time in the Withers. Gets the aforementioned Velazquez for his first trip over the surface. Break will be key for him as he’s fast enough to lead going longer, but too slow to overcome a bad break from this post. Look for him again in New York.

11. Ete Indien – 11 1/2 lengths best of the rest in the Holy Bull, but three back of Tiz the Law for the win. Set all the fractions in the Bull but couldn’t keep pace with the winner when it counted. Gets Geroux for a chance to score his first graded victory. Will have to go from out here and that could prove fatal but would have to say he’s 1-2-3 in here.

12. Chance It – Terrible place to play from as he’ll be widest of all going into the first turn. Enters as the winner of the key race which saw third place finisher Sole Volante return victorious in the Sam Davis over highly touted Independence Hall. Had inside advantage last time over As Seen on Tv. Can’t see him taking them all the way around from out here. CAUTION.
