Storm the Court contender profile
The back story is that his sire, Court Vision, won the Remsen and Iroquois at 2, and was 3rd in the Wood Memorial and Fountain of Youth before finishing 13th in the ’08 Kentucky Derby, won by Big Brown. Move to the turf in next out Virgina Derby yielded a 2nd place finish before attempting the Travers to no avail in his next start. Closed out 3YO season with back to back turf victories setting the stage for the remainder of his career on grass where he was better closing into speed at 1 mile. In his final start he beat European female sensation Goldikova in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill in 2011. If this guy makes it to the 2020 Kentucky Derby he will do so having won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on the lead at long odds and fending off a late challenge by another longshot contender in Anneau D’Or. Which leads us to the real point of trying to make an early case for or against any of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile 2019 runners or of those in prior BC Juvenile contestants as it relates to performance in the Kentucky Derby as three-year-olds.
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner not a sure thing in Kentucky Derby
Since 1984, when Chief’s Crown won the first Breeders’ Cup Juvenile going 1 mile at Hollywood Park, only twice has the winner gone on to win the Kentucky Derby. Street Sense did it winning the 2006 BC Juvenile and the Kentucky Derby in 2007. And Nyquist won the 2015 Juvenile and the 2016 Derby. But they are the only two in all those years.
