Hall of Fame trainer McGaughey sends out Greatest Honour in $300,000 G2 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream

Off back-to-back wins at Gulfstream Park, Greatest Honour will be seeking his third straight against what appears to be a mediocre field of nine others in the 1 1/16 miles Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes on Saturday.

As part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby prep races, the Fountain of Youth is worth a total of 85 points to be distributed on a 50-20-10-5 split to the top four finishers. Currently in 16th place with 10 points, Greatest Honour can sweep to the lead with a win and pick up the top prize of 50 points.

The Official Field for the 1 1/16 miles Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream

PP. Horse Odds Trainer
1 Drain the Clock 5-1 Saffie
So far, so good for Slam Dunk Racing et als, speedy stable star who is undefeated in 4 of 5 all over the Gulfstream Park surface. Lost irons and rider in the Jean Lafitte at Delta Downs or would likely be a perfect 5 for 5. No points yet, but this one’s worth a fat fifty to the winner and a giant leap into the top 5 on the #KentuckyDerby2021 leader board. No doubt he’ll be close from the break, but distance could be a factor going two-turns for the first time vs. Holy Bull winner and heavy favorite Greatest Honour.
2 Prime Factor 5-1 Pletcher
Easy winner in opener two back for Pletcher, was highly touted going into the gate for the Holy Bull as the favorite but came up 9 lengths short of the winner. Sire Quality Road was a fan favorite at Gulfstream winning the 2009 FOY and the Florida Derby before multiple injuries sidelined his Derby chances. Usually like to take beaten favorites back the next time out but Greatest Honour is a nice one and he’s back in here.
3 Sososubtle 20-1 De La Cerda

In the infamous words of our fake president, Phony Joe Biden, Come on, Man!

4 Fire At Will 7-2 Maker
Bred top, bottom, and sideways to win on the lawn. But there aren’t many rich turf races in North America unless it’s Breeders’ Cup Day. Won on dirt in an off-the-turf sloppy seven furlong race at Saratoga. Obviously talented, short-priced, but would be a surprise for all the marbles.
5 Jirafales 20-1 Delgado
Castellano picked up his first win here yesterday since returning after a leg injury that required surgery last November. Good news for him and the connections of this horse. The bad news is that John Velazquez was aboard in the Holy Bull at long odds and opted to sit out this year’s running of the Fountain of Youth. Adds blinkers for this but breeding is suspect for this level.
4 King’s Ovation 15-1 Romans
I guess you could say he chased Drain the Clock around the track last time in the Swale because he managed to finish second after tracking in third behind the top two who were five in front at the 6 furlong marker. Going two-turns should be to his advantage if Lanerie can get him to relax down the backside. Sitting on a bullet and ready to fire for a piece of this one.
7 Tarantino 8-1 Brisset

Another who contested the Holy Bull last time out and was well beaten by the winner. Was a west coast runner on turf in his first two lifetime starts under the care of Bob Baffert. Won his Gulfstream debut in a 1 mile grass race before a hard fought runner up finish in the Bull. Gets a new rider as Zayas opts to Drain the Clock. And that is telling. Pass on this guy.

8 Greatest Honour 9-5 McGaughey

Love how he looks on paper winning the Holy Bull against several of the same who will go in here. He is two-for-two at the distance in South Florida and keeps his pilot. Pletcher’s horse was favorite over him in the Bull, but not today. Thinking that the Bull’s best was simply better than the rest that day – but there’s a couple of new comers to consider. Should be the winner in what appears to be a less than stellar field for the 2021 Fountain of Youth.

9 Tiz Tact Toe 30-1 Hess

Gets blinkers in first time out for new trainer Hess after being claimed out of a $50K turf try. Was bet down to favoritism with Lasix for the first time and came up a length short in fourth. No Lasix today, so if he needs it, tough. Tiz Tact No.

10 Papetu 15-1 Sano

The last of five from the Holy Bull. He was crushed in New York by Jackie’s Warrior who goes in the Southwest at Oaklawn today. Overmatched in the 2021 crop of three-year-old Kentucky Derby contenders.
