Free Past Performances for 2016 Kentucky Derby Contenders

With less than two weeks to go until the 2016 Kentucky Derby on May 7, Brisnet has released their free past performances for the Top 26 Kentucky Derby contenders by points earned.

Topping the list of 2016 Kentucky Derby contenders is Gun Runner with 151 points and roughly $850K in qualifying stakes race earnings. He’s the winner of 4 of his 5 career starts including the G2 Louisiana Derby in his last and final prep race for the Derby on May 7th. He’s co-owns the highest Brisnet Speed Figure of 104 with Danzing Candy. The later returned to earn that figure in the G2 San Felipe and then returned to finish a fading 4th in the Santa Anita Derby over the slop.

Nyquist early favorite among 2016 Kentucky Derby Contenders

Early Derby favorite and undefeated Nyquist is second in points with 130 despite having won 4 G1’s and 2 G2’s including the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and the Florida Derby. However his highest two speed figures, a 102 in the G2 Best Pal at Del Mar, and a 103 in the G2 San Vicente at Santa Anita, both came sprinting. In the Florida Derby, which was perhaps his best looking performance, he earned a 97 going 1 1/8 miles which is several points lower then others at the distance in their final prep race.

In last weekend’s Wiz Capper Racing Poll we asked the question “Which Derby prep winner was most impressive?” and the majority of voters said Exaggerator’s win in the Santa Anita Derby was better than Nyquist’s Florida Derby.

In the Santa Anita Derby Exaggerator got a 102 after storming home from 13 lengths back to win going away in the slop, making the case for his affinity on the off-going having won the G3 Delta Jackpot in the mud late last year.

Brody’s Cause, who currently leads our “Who will win the Kentucky Derby?” poll and was our pick in the G1 Blue Grass because we loved the change of rider, was a longshot winner of his maiden race going 1 mile at Churchill at odds of 33 to 1. He followed that with a win in the Breeder’s Futurity at Keeneland in which he earned his highest ever Brisnet Speed 95, and then was third behind Nyquist and Swipe in the BC Juvenile in October. He returned in the Tampa Bay Derby to finish up the track but came right back a month later to win the Blue Grass with a 94. And if there’s one thing that sticks out about the fig’s for any of the winning runners who raced at Keeneland it’s that the speed fig’s they earned aren’t as impressive when compared to victories in other races and tracks on their chart. Which tells us that if a horse approaches 100 at Keeneland that race was about as good as it gets there, and Nyquist’s 97 in the BC Juvenile tops all the 2016 Kentucky Derby contenders going into the Derby.

So tell us, who do you like in the Derby?
