Charlatan could be exposed in Division 1 of Arkansas Derby

Kentucky Derby 2020 Date

Free Arkansas Derby past performances for Saturday, May 2, 2020 at Oaklawn Park

Saturday’s G1 $1 million Arkansas Derby for 3YOs drew an overflow field of 22 contenders hoping to gain points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Division 1 on the featured card of Oaklawn Park’s season will go as the 11th race on this Saturday’s card in Hot Springs, Arkansas where racing continues without any fan in the stands. But there will be plenty of action to satisfy racing fans as the highlight of this weekend of racing.

char·la·tan
noun

one making usually showy pretenses to knowledge or ability

The full field of 11 will be headed by even money favorite and undefeated Baffert runner, Charlatan, who is out to prove he’s no fraud. A two-time winner at Santa Anita, he’s yet to compete in stakes company and will get the services of Martin Garcia for the first time in his short career. Garcia is no stranger to the winner’s circle aboard Baffert trainees having won several stakes events around the country riding first call for the Hall of Fame trainer. He’ll open as the favorite breaking from the rail, with a chance to lead them from the start.

The official field for Division 1 of Arkansas Derby 2020

Distance: 1 1/8 miles

PP HORSE TRAINER ODDS
1 Charlatan Baffert 1-1
Baffert will give the leg up to one-time go-to-rider Garcia for the first time on this highly touted contender for September’s Kentucky Derby. Faces 10 other runners, none of which have the look of a winner on paper. Speed and the rail makes him worthy of favoritism in here. But I think we’ll see he’s not all he’s being touted as on Derby Day.
2 My Friends Beer O’Dwyer 20-1
This race may be his precursor for a run in the Preakness. But as a $40K maiden claiming winner of 1 lifetime at Laurel, he’s a far cry from competing against his own kind as a Maryland bred. Has a race over the track, so that helps. And should appreciate the added distance. Over matched for the top spot.
3 Mo Mosa Maker 30-1
Cleverly named son of Uncle Mo was a winner in his third start on Turfway’s all-weather in February. He could see them all cross the wire before him in his next start at 140-1 in the Tampa Derby won by boxcar performer King Guillermo. Considering that one, he was ‘bet down’ to 50-1 LTO here when finishing 6 back of Shooters Shoot, who also returns. Dam is unraced daughter of Eskenderaya who won final three Kentucky Derby preps on his way to favoritism to win the 2010 Roses before an injury forced his retirement. Get the “MiMosas” ready because he could crash the exotics.
4 Gouverneur Morris Pletcher 9-2
4th behind Tiz the Law LTO at this distance in the Florida Derby. That was one of two G1 races he’s competed in for Pletcher without taking down the top prize. Was the winner of his two other starts – a 5 1/2 furlong sloppy start at the Spa, and long sprint at Tampa, two back. Tiz the Law would be favorite over Charlatan in here, so that’s saying something for this guy. But Pletcher is 0 for 6 in Hot Springs. Gotta use him.
5 Jungle Runner Asmussen 30-1
Blinkers on last time. Blinkers off this time, when showing no improvement as the final horse to cross the wire in the five horse Mine That Bird Derby at Sunland LTO. Twice a winner at Remington after starting career at Ellis with two warm ups. Low numbers all the way around.
6 Shooters Shoot Eurton 8-1
“Shooter” is sitting on a best of 12 ‘bullet’ move going 5/8s a week ago, after taking back-to-back 1 mile tries in his last two starts. Three back, he was six lengths behind Charlatan but seven in front of the 3rd place finisher in a 4 horse field. Sire won first 4 for Pletcher. And grandsire, Super Saver, won the Derby for Pletcher. If anyone has a shot to ‘expose’ Charlatan, it’s this guy.
7 Wrecking Crew Miller 20-1
Trainer, Miller (5 for 33/15%), reunites this runner with Prat who was aboard for only win, a first out victory going 6 at Del Mar last July. Closed out a boxcar trifecta in the ’19 BC Juvenile, a race that hasn’t produced any runners worthy of consideration on this year’s Triple Crown Trail. Twice beaten by Anneau d’Or.
8 Anneau d’Or Wright 6-1
Easy first out winner on turf at Golden Gate last September to earn his way into the aforementioned BC Juvenile at 28-1 behind equally high priced Storm the Court (45-1) who will go in Division 2 on Arkansas Derby day. Has the right stalking style to take this one, if good enough. But his last out effort as the favorite (wearing blinkers for the first time) in the split division Risen Star at Fair Grounds, is cause to pause in here. Blinkers off today could make the difference.
9 Winning Impression Stewart 15-1
Takes a big jump up in class after being DQ’d from 1st to 5th here last time out in a $80K OC/NW1X on the slop. His only other time crossing the wire first was in the slop at Fair Grounds, to officially break his maiden. Finnick the Fierce ended up as the winner from last and will go in Division 2. Sitting on a best of bullet and Leparoux is back aboard. No rain in the forecast for this off-track specialist.
10 Crypto Cash McPeek 20-1
Broke his maiden at Ellis then won his next start on turf at Churchill over yielding ground. That’s not an easy task. Took 4 months off and returned in Turfway’s Rushaway to finish 4th of 7. He’s all over the place for low percentage connections.
11 Basin Asmussen 8-1
Started career getting beat a nose sprinting at Churchill. But followed up with two wins at Saratoga including the Hopeful on an off-track. Last two here were wet track efforts finishing on the board in the Rebel two back, and the Oaklawn Stakes in his last start. Asmussen will give the leg up to barn rider Santana who knows him. And track should be fast. Too bad he draws the worst.
