Free Tampa Derby past performances for March 07, 2020 at Tampa Bay Downs

The field for the Tampa Derby (G2) $400,000 will go as the 11th race on a long card in Tampa, Florida.

The full field of 12 is headed by the Sam F. Davis winner Sole Volante who returns to face off against second choice Chance It who was the victor of the head-to-head matchup in the Mucho Macho Man in January. The field of Derby hopefuls will be racing towards the top cash prize in the graded stakes event for three-year-olds on the Road to the Kentucky Derby on May 2. In addition to the purse money, the Tampa Derby will award points to the top four finishers in a 50-20-10-5 distribution.

The Official Field for the 1 1/16 miles Tampa Derby (G2) at Tampa Bay Downs

1. Texas Swing – All the right angles to win right back of maiden score – except one. Velazquez takes the call on the Winstar runner Market Analysis who broke his maiden at first asking last time out at Gulfstream. This guy returns off a maiden score here a month ago. Rail draw will have him forwardly placed in a race with no extreme standouts. Tough to win first crack back vs. winners but expect him to make a strong showing with an on the board finish.

2. Spa City – Sire Street Sense won this race in ’07 after winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile to close out his 2YO season. Gets a new jockey for trainer who recently announced he’ll transition away from giving a leg up to the rider of his charge on race day, and focus on getting the leg up for Luis Saez as his new agent. But standout Tampa Bay jock Centeno gets the call this time, replacing the injured Ortiz Jr., and this guy improved greatly to take a 1 1/8 miles maiden at GP with a 103 BRIS speed figure that surpasses the 102 earned by this race favorite Sole Volante LTO in the Sam Davis. Tough to win right back.

3. Relentless Dancer – Louisiana bred, he picks up another TB top jock in Gallardo, and exits the G3 Holy Bull from which runner up Ete Indien returned to take the G2 Fountain of Youth. Finished 4th beaten 18 lengths that day. Won prior two by a combined 20 lengths in a CD maiden and the statebred Louisiana Legacy at Delta. This will be his second start off a 4 month layoff and should be asked from the break. Sire Midshipman was a lightly raced sprinter without much claim to fame. Could hang around longer than expected off his ‘Bull’ run. But tough to back in here.

4. Chance It – Second choice at 5/2, he gets a new rider in Lopez, looking to win his fifth of seven starts for high percentage trainer, and relative newcomer, Saffie Joseph, Jr. and Shooting Star Thoroughbreds. Won the 1 mile Mucho Macho Man over Sole Volante, but will have to carry his speed an additional 1/16th with added pace pressure. Swapped board placings in three prior races with Liam’s Lucky Charm who was 10th in the Risen Star and 9th in the FOY. Has a ‘Chance’ in here but don’t expect much of one as the real running on the Road continues.

5. Market Analysis – 1 for 1, he comes in for Pletcher with a shot at grabbing one of the three 50 point preps to be run on Saturday. Runner up from last will go in the G3 Gotham after a smashing performance in the slop LTO, finishing the 1 mile with a 101 BRIS speed figure. Handicapper has installed him at the 8-1 ‘any kind’ line. Don’t dismiss!

6. Mo Mosa – Added blinkers to take his third start on the Turfway tundra by 5. Goes on dirt for the first time at long odds. Hard to see him improving right back against multi-race winners. But no doubt blinkers helped him focus.

7. Sole Volante – The favorite and likely winner. He stomped the heavily favorite Independence Hall LTO in the Sam Davis. And if he wins this one, he’ll have stamped his name in the Road to the Derby with 60 points on the leaderboard. Gets Geroux to make it a French Connection with trainer Biancone who’s looking for his next best Derby prospect. Sire was a Japan bred turf specialist in France, and won the 2014 BC Mile at Santa Anita. But closed out his career in defeat finishing 11th at Keeneland in that race in 2015. Don’t get too caught up in his win over Independence Hall as that one isn’t what everyone thought going into the Davis. Proceed with CAUTION.

8. Letmeno – Not a fan of winners at Ellis, so there’s that. Came running from way back to finish a head back for third, and seven back of Dennis who had his final moment in the Fountain of Youth. Competitive in four starts, he appears several notches below the better ones in his class.

9. Unrighteous – Gets Bravo, while Saez rides Attachment Rate in today’s Gotham. This is Pletcher, so he has a shot. Horse is looking for his first win and will wear blinkers to try and turn tables on Spa City after back to back beats by that one. But if Pletcher is willing to try him against winners, that should tell us that his last race – and Spa City’s – was a good one.

10. Bye Bye Melvin – Sole dirt try in five starts was an off-the-turf effort at Keeneland in the slop. Won his last two here on turf. Son of Uncle Mo who won the Champagne and BC Juvenile at 2. But never stepped up as a 3YO. Gets Leparoux for Motion but you can’t make them win if the talent and the pedigree isn’t there.

11. King Guillermo – Another from ‘Mo’ – he won his second out maiden on turf at the GPW meet where the waters aren’t as deep. Has some early foot and was bet down in each of his three starts. Still King ‘William’ who was once favored over Sole Volante, won’t know what hit him from way out here.

12. Tons of Gold – Gets blinkers and exits the Attachment Rate race that compelled that one’s connections to enter in today’s Gotham. Still, he’s O for 8. Has the parking lot spot. And no speed. What do you think?
